CEA Congratulates- the below apprentices for exploring NJEA opportunities.
Randie Cosby is a special education teacher in Camden. She is a building rep for the CEA. Randie was recently selected to participate in the NEA UniServ Intern Program and will complete her field experience in one of our southern UniServ offices this fall in an NJEA UniServ regional office. Oretta Thomas works as a confidential clerk in the offices of Human Resources. She previously worked in the Berlin Township School District - the last non-unionized school staff in New Jersey before they affiliated with NJEA - where she served on the local association's very first Negotiations Committee.

By-Laws Amendments - A special election will be held on June 6-8, 2011 to allow the membership to vote on these amendments.

Calling All CEA Members! Say No to Vouchers!  WE need your help!

On Feb. 3, after a hearing that went past 8 p.m., the Assembly Commerce and Economic Development Committee voted 5-0 to approve A-2810, its version of the so-called “Opportunity Scholarship Act.”  The voucher bill was released by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee on Jan. 20 as S-1872.  It would divert up to hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue away from public schools and into the hands of private and parochial school operators.

The next stop for the bill is the Assembly Budget Committee.  No date has been set for a hearing (although February 17th is a rumor).  Should it pass that committee, it would move to the Assembly floor for a vote.  But there are signs that the anti-voucher lobbying effort by NJEA and a large coalition of pro-public education organizations is having an impact on rank-and-file legislators, so it’s vitally important to keep up the pressure.

Legislators report that there is still much to consider before this Bill becomes law.  They are questioning special education's role in the Bill, accountability, the $50 million dollars that the Bill doles out in management fees, and what happens when students are not successful in private schools.

Legislators against this Bill have even encouraged NJEA members, their families, and friends to keep up the pressure through phone calls, emails, and letters.

Time is short! CEA members and all those who support public education in New Jersey must act now to stop this harmful legislation which drains much-needed resources from our public schools.

Please TAKE ACTION today to help stop vouchers: TO DO (NEW):*  To See Attached Form on the Web Site Click

Remember, you should call during normal business hours (make sure you call during your lunch period or after school) from either your cell or home phone.  If no one answers, leaving a message is OK.  If the phone is busy or the answering machine is full, try calling back later.

Key Facts About S1872/A2810 Vouchers (Opportunity Scholarship Act).....Camden City Schools will be among the hardest hit, with 21 of its 31 schools on the list - 81% of its total student enrollment.  S1872/A2810 could result in the loss of thousands of jobs for Camden's citizens.

ATTENTION: CEA MEMBERS
Q:  My contract expired June 30, 2009, what happens now?
A:   You operate under the terms of the expired contract.

Q:  Are teacher salaries and benefits the reason property taxes are so high?
A:  Not true. For the past 30 years, school spending has consumed a constant percentage (approximately 55 percent) of local property tax costs. Property taxes in New Jersey are high because New Jersey ranks 45th among the 50 states in state support for local public schools, which puts the lion's share of the burden on property taxpayers.  Only 35 cents of every public school dollar comes from the state, while nearly 60 cents comes from the property tax.

Q:  Are New Jersey public schools failing?
A:  By any objective measure, New Jersey's schools are among the very best in the nation.  From high quality public preschools, to exceptional performance on national assessments, to graduates who are among the very best prepared for college and careers, our schools excel. Of course there is still room for progress in some areas, and New Jersey is a leader there as well.  Our schools lead the nation in closing the achievement gap, due in large measure to our ongoing commitment to our urban schools. (for detalied information about New Jersey's excellent public schools, go to njea.org/goodnews)
